Local man will go head-to-head to win $10,000

National Geographic Channel announced the launch of the April 2011 Expedition Granted online voting contest, in which two National Geographic Young Explorers go head-to-head to win $10,000 toward their expedition of choice.

Starting Sunday, March 13, leading up to NGC’s signature event Expedition Week ? which features seven straight nights of TV premieres on groundbreaking expeditions ? Dashiell “Dash” Masland (27) and Trevor Frost (25) will make on-air appeals and provide weekly blog updates to solicit votes.  Viewers, in turn, will choose their favorite explorer online at natgeotv.com/expedition.

As part of the initiative, voters are automatically registered for a four-person, 10-day adventure to the Galápagos Islands, courtesy of National Geographic Expeditions.

Dash’s proposed expedition is to study the dietary habits of Hawaiian monk seals, one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. Trevor plans to work with scientists and park rangers in three parks in Indonesia ? where the illegal wildlife trade is rampant ? to better protect its endangered creatures and habitats.

Winners will be announced Thursday night, April 7, during Expedition Week.  The runner-up receives $2,500.

HANOVER COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - Changes to real estate regulations in Hanover seem to be generating positive feedback. The county and realtors needed to reach a compromise about real estate signs.

There are really three main types of real estate signs: a yard sign that goes up in front a home when it's for sale and also lead in signs and open house signs

Hanover realtors were once required get permits for signs. Working with the county--both sides agreed it was too much to ask.

Prepare yourself for an emergency

Hanover County Fire/EMS is offering a special class to help you become prepared to help others and yourself in the event of an emergency or disaster. The next CERT (“Community Emergency Response Teams”) training classes will be held beginning April 13. Please sign up by Friday, April 1.

Classes will be held on Wednesday nights from 6:00-9:00 at the Harman-Taylor Fire/EMS Training Center west of Ashland. Classes are taught by professionals from Hanover Fire/EMS, the American Red Cross and other agencies which are active in emergency preparedness.

Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to reach everyone. People will have to rely on each other for help in order to meet immediate lifesaving and life-sustaining needs. CERT members will be trained to help fill that need in the community.

These students complete seven sessions covering various aspects of preparation for a disaster in their community, including providing medical assistance to victims and, light search and rescue operations and disaster psychology and team organization.

Hanover accepting applications for new superintendent

By Ben Garbarek - bio | email

ASHLAND, VA (WWBT) - If you have experience as a school administrator, there's a job you might be interested in applying for. Hanover County is now taking applications for a new school superintendent.

The county will be accepting applications from now until March 26th and hope to have someone hired by early May. Consultants were hired to find out what people were looking for in a new superintendent. We asked the same question today and most people we spoke to have high expectations.

Whoever takes over as the new superintendent of Hanover County schools has big shoes to fill. Current Superintendent Stewart Roberson is retiring and many of the people we spoke to Thursday agree with Pete Taylor - they want someone else just like Roberson.
