Hanover Co. enjoying million dollar surplus

By Ben Garbarek - bio | email

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - There are signs the economy is finally starting to improve in Hanover County. People are spending more money and that's translating into more sales tax revenue for the county.

Hanover County has over a million dollar surplus largely thanks to an extra $750,000 in sales tax and personal property tax revenues. Many in Hanover hope this is one sign that the recession is finally in the rearview mirror.

Shopper Colleen Kenyon says she's noticed stores are a little busier and says it's nice to hear some positive economic news for a change.

"I'm glad that the county has a surplus," she said. "I know the schools were really tight on money and they had to lay off a bunch of people. It's nice to know there's more money."

Project staff will be visiting the Mechanicsville Branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library on February 26 from 10 AM to 6 PM.  Appointments are encouraged.  For more information contact Brenda Pennington at 804.559.7745 or brendapenn@verizon.net.

Deer takes a dive

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - A viewer in Hanover had an unusual experience Thursday afternoon involving a deer, a pool - and a female Animal Control officer....and he caught it all on his digital camera.

"I happened to look up, and I saw about 30 deer standing in the field, so I thought it would be pretty cool to get some pictures of it," said Hanover resident Lucas Tucker.

When you live in eastern Hanover County, spotting a deer or two is almost an everyday experience, but eyeballing a herd of 30 or more doesn't happen all that often. That's why Lucas Tucker got out his camera.

"He ran two circles around my neighbor's house and back into my yard twice," he said.

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Freedom was short-lived for a former Christian youth worker accused in a federal child sex crime case.

30-year-old Kenneth Mullens, Junior is back behind bars now facing state charges of taking indecent liberties with two teenage boys in Henrico.

30 days - the length of time Mullens spent at home before the Mechanicsville man was reacquainted with a jail cell.
