12 INVESTIGATES: Angie's List rankings

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- So you need a plumber, maybe a mechanic, but you don't know who to trust - so you go to Angie's List. But, can you trust that the company ranked at the top of the list is the very best? Some local business owners say the answer is no!

Money has a lot to do with it - even Angie herself comes clean on who's on the list and how they got there.

But how big a part does money play?

"There are all sorts of layers of 'pay to play,'" said Hugh Joyce, personable president of James River Air, and the company's long-time pitch man.

ON YOUR SIDE: Grandmother wins custody of child

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A child custody battle after a young mother's murder is settled in a story we've been following for months.

Charlene Watkins feared she would also lose her grandson after her daughter was shot dead. The man a grand jury indicted walked on the murder charge when witnesses refused to testify.

The grieving grandmother, who turned to 12 On Your Side to tell her story, was granted custody, not the baby's father.

In fact, Kelvonte Keel, the child's father, was thrown in jail for 10 days after he tested positive for cocaine.

According to Charlene Watkins and her attorney, Kelvonte Keel showed up to the child custody case with cocaine in his system. The drug test results may have made up the judge's mind to grant custody to the grandmother whose daughter was murdered.

Man convicted of killing Atlee teen faces charges for jail brawl

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A man convicted in the murder of an Atlee High School student is facing new charges stemming from a recent fight in jail.

Xavia Highsmith is facing felony charges for the malicious wounding of a Henrico jail inmate.

The 20-year-old has been charged, along with another inmate, for an attack on another inmate. That inmate's injury was so severe that he had to have multiple staples in the back of his head.

Highsmith, along with two other teens, shot 16-year-old Brett Wells in January of 2012, so they could steal the marijuana he was planning to sell to them.

Highsmith was sentenced earlier this year to 27 years in prison in connection with that shooting death.

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Namebrand vs generic - peaches

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- NBC12 goes the distance to find the real difference between name brand and generic products.

Every time you're in the grocery store, you have to choose: buy the name brand and pay more or save with the generic. I wanted to see if there was any difference in the amount of actual product you get.

I'm comparing six different brands of peaches. Del Monte and Libby are the name brands. Kroger, Martin's, Food Lion and Walmart all have their own version.

According to the labels, each of these cans is identical in serving size, servings per container and ingredients. What differs is the price. The cheapest peaches come from Walmart - they're $0.98. Del Monte is the most expensive at $1.38.

I carefully pour all the liquid out of each can and set aside the peaches. I weigh each cup of liquid, subtracting the weight of the cup itself.

12 Investigates: "Bad Hass" license plate controversy

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT)- A license plate in Petersburg has the Department of Motor Vehicles up in arms. The agency is asking for the tags back, but a local family is saying not so fast. They claim the DMV is violating their constitutional right to free speech.

The Virginia vanity plate "B-A-D-H-A-S-S" makes a statement - but it might not be the one you think.

"I'm not putting out a cuss word on my plate. I'm putting my last name on my plate," said Cindy Hass. "It's a nickname I had in high school. People would see me, they'd say 'hey, what's up Bad Hass.' "

It's a German name and used to be spelled H-A-A-S. Her family's spelled it H-A-S-S for a century. She's had the license plate for around seven years.

New book recommends you "Forget the Resume" to get a job

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Have you been looking for a job without success? A new book, Forget the Resume, says traditional methods may not be working and recommends a totally different approach.

If you're looking for a job, you're likely writing cover letters, posting your resume online, and attending job fairs. Marketing expert John Lee wrote in his book Forget the Resume, those approaches may not be getting the job done.

If you submit your resume to job search websites, Lee says many companies use technology to scan them for key words related to the job opening. If you don't use the right words, your resume won't get noticed.

"It has caused a lot of people to be left out that are really very qualified individuals," Lee explains.
