Man convicted of killing Atlee teen faces charges for jail brawl

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A man convicted in the murder of an Atlee High School student is facing new charges stemming from a recent fight in jail.

Xavia Highsmith is facing felony charges for the malicious wounding of a Henrico jail inmate.

The 20-year-old has been charged, along with another inmate, for an attack on another inmate. That inmate's injury was so severe that he had to have multiple staples in the back of his head.

Highsmith, along with two other teens, shot 16-year-old Brett Wells in January of 2012, so they could steal the marijuana he was planning to sell to them.

Highsmith was sentenced earlier this year to 27 years in prison in connection with that shooting death.

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Namebrand vs generic - peaches

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- NBC12 goes the distance to find the real difference between name brand and generic products.

Every time you're in the grocery store, you have to choose: buy the name brand and pay more or save with the generic. I wanted to see if there was any difference in the amount of actual product you get.

I'm comparing six different brands of peaches. Del Monte and Libby are the name brands. Kroger, Martin's, Food Lion and Walmart all have their own version.

According to the labels, each of these cans is identical in serving size, servings per container and ingredients. What differs is the price. The cheapest peaches come from Walmart - they're $0.98. Del Monte is the most expensive at $1.38.

I carefully pour all the liquid out of each can and set aside the peaches. I weigh each cup of liquid, subtracting the weight of the cup itself.

12 Investigates: "Bad Hass" license plate controversy

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT)- A license plate in Petersburg has the Department of Motor Vehicles up in arms. The agency is asking for the tags back, but a local family is saying not so fast. They claim the DMV is violating their constitutional right to free speech.

The Virginia vanity plate "B-A-D-H-A-S-S" makes a statement - but it might not be the one you think.

"I'm not putting out a cuss word on my plate. I'm putting my last name on my plate," said Cindy Hass. "It's a nickname I had in high school. People would see me, they'd say 'hey, what's up Bad Hass.' "

It's a German name and used to be spelled H-A-A-S. Her family's spelled it H-A-S-S for a century. She's had the license plate for around seven years.

New book recommends you "Forget the Resume" to get a job

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Have you been looking for a job without success? A new book, Forget the Resume, says traditional methods may not be working and recommends a totally different approach.

If you're looking for a job, you're likely writing cover letters, posting your resume online, and attending job fairs. Marketing expert John Lee wrote in his book Forget the Resume, those approaches may not be getting the job done.

If you submit your resume to job search websites, Lee says many companies use technology to scan them for key words related to the job opening. If you don't use the right words, your resume won't get noticed.

"It has caused a lot of people to be left out that are really very qualified individuals," Lee explains.

"The schools really keep you informed about what's going on," said Mack. "I think it's a good thing, because we have become really complacent."

State and local police are on heightened alert in the wake of the tragedies in Boston and Connecticut. Investigators say, that's because the public is more sensitive to their surroundings.
