State remembers VA Tech massacre six years later

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- As the country mourns the tragedy in Boston, the Commonwealth came together Tuesday to honor the victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre. It's been six years since a gunman shot and killed 32 people on campus before killing himself.

There was a universal theme of sadness at the Capitol's bell tower Tuesday morning during a solemn reflection mixed with prayers for peace as the nation and our state try to make sense of these senseless tragedies.

The sound of each bell - a symbol of lives lost six years ago.

"It brought tears to my eyes. I was thinking at that time there was mayhem, chaos and massacre at Virginia Tech. Our children and professors were being killed at those very times the bells were being rung," said Joseph Samaha of the Virginia Tech Family Foundations.

Families of victims and survivors joined supporters at the bell tower, vowing to never forget something everyone wishes would've never happened.

ON YOUR SIDE: Scammers take advantage of Boston marathon tragedy

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Watch out for scams claiming to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Phony charities and fraudulent accounts have flooded social media.

12 On Your Side is working to help you select safe options for giving.

It's sad to have to warn people of predators who play on emotions, but it happens like clock work. Scammers come out when people are hurt and others want to help.

Several Twitter accounts were shut down today to stop crooks from capitalizing on the terror in Boston. The accounts were set up within hours after the Boston Marathon finish line explosions.

One Twitter account had 52,000 retweets - a fake accounts soliciting donations.

Attempts at fraud don't stop there. By this afternoon, over 100 website domain names were established referencing the Boston Marathon bombings.

On Your Side Alert: Unclaimed reward points

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Credit card users, you'll be excited to hear this story is not about late payments or high interest rates. This is about those attractive rewards points programs. Right now, you could have unclaimed rewards and money waiting on you.

Every year, consumers forget to cash in on reward points they sign up for. Rebecca Gershowitz, with Clear Point Credit Counseling Solutions, says not keeping tabs on your points, is like giving away free money.

"It's actually a pretty wide spread problem, about a third of the people who have rewards points forgets to cash out on them and it's about an average of 205 dollars of savings for each consumer," she said.

That money could be waiting on you. All you have to do is visit your credit card's website or contact the customers service department to see if you're able to collect.

Get ready for a longer allergy season

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- If you're sneezing, sniffling, and getting red watery eyes - allergists say you can expect more misery than usual this year.

Allergies will last longer than last year thanks to a wet and milder winter.

For many, springtime allergies can get so bad, allergists say it's a legitimate reason to call out sick.

"It's really hard to pay attention in school; you don't sleep, well so you'll have chronic fatigue," said Allergist, Dr. Ananth Thyagarajan.

Dr. Thyagarajan says he is swamped with patients this time of year.

He's treating young Jasmine today, who, like many school-aged children, deals with allergies - but for her it's severe.

"She had really severe frequent nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose... for her it was year round, but it worsened in the spring," said Thyagarajan.
