Volunteers Needed for the Hanover Senior Travel Commission

Are you an active adult age 50 or over that loves to travel? Do you love planning trips to exciting new places and meeting new people? If so, the Hanover Senior Travel Commission is in search of you!

The commission has 21 years of dedicated volunteer service to the community and consists of 12 members that represent all voting districts in the county. These volunteer members each serve a two-year term and attend meetings each month where they discuss trip suggestions, research trips and coordinate trip information and logistics. Members also serve as Primary and Assistant Tour Escorts for the exciting trips that are planned.

All potential Commission members need to complete the Hanover Senior Travel Commission 2013-2014 application and return it to Hanover County Parks and Recreation no later than September 21, 2012. During the month of October, selected applicants will be contacted for an interview, and applicants selected to serve on the Hanover Senior Travel Commission will be contacted in December.

Moon Landing Anniversary

July 20, 1969 was a big day for astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin when they became the first humans to land on the moon. Six hours later, on July 21, Armstrong became the first person to actually step onto the moon, which he described to a world-wide audience on live television as "one small step for man..." Hanover Tomato Festival in Search of Volunteers

How would you like to be a part of one of the most popular events in Hanover? The Hanover Tomato Festival is looking for a few good men and women to assist on Saturday July 14th at Pole Green Park. With over 40,000 attendees expected and a fun day of games, rides, crafters, artisans, tomatoes and great food planned, we need plenty of extra hands to make it all happen. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: traffic control, tomato sales and children’s activities. Don’t have a whole day to spare? Don’t worry! There are several 5-6.5 hour shifts available between 7am to 4pm, making convenient for even the busiest schedule. All volunteers will receive refreshments and special parking. Enjoy the Fall Mountain Spectacular with the Hanover Senior Travel Commission

Join the Hanover Seniors October 8-9 as they travel to Elkins, West Virginia. Experience music and laughter at the American Mountain Theater, West Virginia’s first and only ‘Branson Style’ music and comedy variety show. Partnered with a delightful four hour train ride aboard the “New Tygart Flyer”, you will have to go a long way to beat this combination of music, mountain wilderness and wonderful meals. Bus will depart from Shady Grove United Methodist Church and Ashland Shopping Center. Cost of trip is $450 single; $390 double; $370 triple; $360 quad; and includes: roundtrip motorcoach transportation, overnight hotel accommodations, baggage handling (1 large bag per person), one continental breakfast, one enhanced continental breakfast, two delicious lunches, two full course dinners, History of American Music Show, American Mountain Theater Production, four hour train ride aboard the “New Tygart Flyer”, driver gratuity, and refreshments aboard motorcoach. Start Planting your Tomatoes for the Hanover Tomato Contest!

The weather is getting warmer, and that means it’s time to start planting Hanover tomatoes!  Grow your best tomatoes and start perfecting your recipes for this year’s Hanover Tomato Contest, which takes place at the Hanover Tomato Festival. Our judges can’t wait to taste your best salsa or tomato based dish made with the one and only Hanover tomato. Winners of the recipe contest will have the chance for their prized dish to be featured in Marty’s Grill during the month of August, and will reign with bragging rights until next year. Don’t have a great recipe, don’t worry! We have categories for those with green thumbs as well. Enter your largest, smallest, tastiest, green and even ugliest Hanover tomato for judging and prizes. All tomato entries must feature Hanover tomatoes and will be judged on-site at the Hanover Tomato Festival on Saturday, July 14th at Pole Green Park, and winners will be announced on the main entertainment stage during the event.

The Hanover Tomato Festival is in search of vendors who make or sell unique tomato-related products. This fun filled event highlights the Hanover Tomato and features children’s activities, crafters, artisans and live entertainment.  With so much to offer, Hanover’s most popular event draws close to 40,000 attendees, making it a great platform for your company to reach thousands. The Hanover Tomato Festival will take place on July 14, 2012 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at Pole Green Park located at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
